Amar’s Bio

About Me

Hello! Dobar Dan!

My name is Amar Duratovic.

I will tell you a bit about me and the idea behind this little project…

I was born and raised in a coastal town in the South East of England. This is where I went to school, college and graduated from the University of Brighton in 2016.

I studied BSc Physical Geography & Geology and I am employed as a Geologist for a rooftile manufacturing company.

My parents are from Bosnia and arrived and settled during the war. I visit Bosnia once a year to see family and I would say that my spoken language is good, but I need much more practice!

I am naturally an introvert and I wasn’t big on the social front. Now this is something I can’t go without, go figure...

My Interests / Hobbies

I’ve had a keen interest in history from a young age and my uncle had a big influence on me. I’m particularly interested in ancient Mediterranean history (Romans!).

I really got into the history of metal working; smelting, blacksmithing and mining in pre-industrial times. This is the point where my interest in Geology solidified.

I used to wonder what rocks I was picking up and why they looked the way they did. It was really until my second year of college I decided to study Geography & Geology over History or Archaeology.

I was part of a coastal rowing club for almost 10 years. I plan to join a sailing club this summer.

I did try my luck at football, karate and rugby… where I failed rather miserably! I’m a bit of a dissapointment to the Balkan community ;)

I’m also a proud nerd. I like board games, D&D and I am a massive Tolkien and Witcher fan! Hey, I have Henry Cavill to back me up..

Why BosBrits?

You may be wondering what drove me to spend hours of my time to start this experimental project?!

I’ve been meeting new British Bosnians over the past few years, especially the first generation. From this I have developed new strong friendships and a happy relationship.

During the srebrenica peace walk in July 2023, London, I met even more incredible people. It is in this moment a question struck me - “how many more people like this have I not met from our community yet?”.

I want other people to have the same chance as I have to meet some great people, especially for us introverted folk. So, I asked myself the question “what is the best way to encourage people from different corners of the country to meet”. I had a bit of a lightbulb moment that if there was a easy and fun way to do so, people will probably give it a go.

And this is the part where I find out if this idea succeeds or not!
